Rainfall — Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as light, moderate or heavy rain?

Light rain is generally under 2.5 mm per hour and barely wets the ground. Moderate rain (2.5–7.6 mm/h) produces small puddles. Heavy rain (above 7.6 mm/h) pools water quickly and can overwhelm drainage — the intensity reading above uses this same scale.

What does "chance of rain" actually mean?

Chance of rain is the probability that measurable rain (at least 0.1 mm) falls at your exact location during the period shown — it is not the percentage of the day it will rain, nor how heavy the rain will be. A 40% chance means 4 times out of 10 similar setups, rain occurs somewhere in that area.

Why do model-based rainfall totals sometimes differ from a garden gauge?

This page uses forecast-model precipitation resolved to your coordinates, which represents rainfall over a grid cell rather than the exact spot your physical gauge sits in. Over a full day the two usually agree closely, but a small, sharp shower can fall between grid points and be measured differently by each.

Where can I see rainfall totals over the last week, month or year?

This page focuses on today's rainfall and the next 24 hours. For 7-day, 30-day, month-to-date and year-to-date totals — including a comparison against the 10-year average for your exact location — use the dedicated rainfall totals tool.

Current Rainfall Near Me and Worldwide

This page shows live rainfall for your location or any city worldwide — today's total, current rain rate, an intensity classification, and the chance of rain over the next 24 hours — plus a 24-hour rainfall chart, a 24-hour forecast, and a live precipitation and radar map.

Rainfall Intensity Explained

Rainfall intensity is measured in millimetres per hour and classified from light (drizzle you barely notice) through moderate and heavy to violent. The intensity reading above updates with the live rate, so you can see at a glance whether current conditions are a light shower or a genuine downpour.

Reading the Chart and Forecast

The bar chart shows rainfall hour by hour over the last 24 hours, making it easy to see exactly when today's rain fell rather than just the running total. The forecast strip extends the same model forward to +24 hours, showing expected rainfall and chance of rain for the day ahead.

Rainfall Totals: 24h, 7-Day, Month and Year

This page is built around today's rainfall and the short-term picture. For the fuller accumulation view — last 7 and 30 days, month-to-date, year-to-date, and how this year compares with the 10-year average for your exact location — see the dedicated rainfall totals tool, which answers "how much rain did we get" over any of those windows.
