Weather & Climate in Foshan

Foshan, a major city in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong province, sits immediately southwest of Guangzhou in southern China at approximately 23.02°N, 113.12°E. Just north of the Tropic of Cancer, it has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) verging on tropical — with long, hot, wet summers and short, mild, drier winters — shaped by the monsoon and exposed to South China Sea typhoons.

Summer is long, hot and humid, running from around April to October, with July the warmest month — average highs around 33–34°C — and heavy humidity. This is the wet season, when the monsoon brings frequent downpours and thunderstorms, and from June to October typhoons off the South China Sea can bring torrential rain, flooding and strong winds to the delta.

Winter, from December to February, is short, mild and drier, with January the coolest month — average highs around 18–19°C and lows near 10–11°C, rarely near frost. Brief cold snaps from the north can bring chilly, damp spells, but genuine cold is unknown, and this mild, relatively dry stretch is the most comfortable time of year.

Foshan is wet, receiving around 1,600–1,700 mm of rain a year, overwhelmingly concentrated in the wet season from April to September, when monsoon rains and typhoons deliver the heaviest falls, while winter is relatively dry. Live rainfall, humidity, and pressure readings for the city are shown in the panels above.

Foshan, part of the vast Guangzhou–Foshan metropolitan core of the Pearl River Delta, shares the region's hot, humid, subtropical climate with long wet summers and short mild winters. The delta is often overcast, with the sun rarely seen from late winter into spring, and the typhoon season from June to October brings the main hazard of torrential rain and flooding to the low-lying, densely built delta.
