Weather & Climate in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam (Vizag), the largest city of Andhra Pradesh, sits on the Bay of Bengal coast of eastern India, between the Eastern Ghats and the sea at approximately 17.69°N, 83.21°E. Its coastal position gives it a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) — hot, humid and moderated by the sea — with a monsoon season and exposure to Bay of Bengal cyclones.

Summer, from March to June, is hot and humid, with May the hottest month — highs around 34–36°C — tempered by sea breezes, though the humidity makes the heat feel heavy. The southwest monsoon then arrives in June and runs to September, bringing frequent heavy rain and thick cloud; the coastal hills catch additional rainfall from the moist onshore winds.

Winter, from November to February, is warm, dry and pleasant, with January the coolest month — highs around 28–29°C and comfortable nights near 18–20°C, with lower humidity and abundant sunshine. This mild, dry, breezy stretch is comfortably the best time of year on the coast, though the retreating monsoon can bring late rain in October.

Visakhapatnam receives around 1,000–1,100 mm of rain a year, mostly from the southwest monsoon between June and September, with additional rain from the retreating northeast monsoon in October and November; the rest of the year is dry. Live rainfall, humidity, and pressure readings for the city are shown in the panels above.

Tropical cyclones are the gravest hazard of Vizag's climate: its exposed position on the Bay of Bengal coast places it in the path of storms that form most often before and after the monsoon, in April–May and October–November. Cyclone Hudhud struck the city directly in 2014, causing severe damage and stripping much of its tree cover.
