Weather & Climate in Kyiv

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, sits in the north-central part of the country on the Dnieper River, on the East European Plain far from any moderating sea, at approximately 50.45°N, 30.52°E. It has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) with cold, snowy winters and warm summers, and a large annual temperature range typical of its inland, continental position, open to both Atlantic and continental air.

Summer, from June to August, is warm and the wettest season, with July the warmest month — average highs around 25–26°C and mild nights. It is changeable: Atlantic fronts bring cooler, showery spells and afternoon thunderstorms, while spells of hot continental air can push temperatures above 30°C. The long days bring plenty of daylight, and the surrounding countryside is green and lush.

Winter, from December to February, is cold, grey and snowy, with January and February the coldest — average highs around freezing or just below and lows near -6°C, with cold snaps driven by continental air that can drop temperatures below -15°C. Snow covers the city for much of the season, typically from December into March, and the days are short, with frequent overcast skies, though crisp, bright, deeply cold days also occur.

Kyiv receives around 600–650 mm of precipitation a year, with a clear summer maximum from thunderstorms and a fairly even spread the rest of the year; a good share of the cold-season total falls as snow, which accumulates and lies through the long winter. Live rainfall, humidity, and pressure readings for the city are shown in the panels above.

Kyiv's inland, continental setting gives it a wide seasonal swing — from -15°C winter nights to 30°C-plus summer afternoons — with a long, snowy winter that defines much of the year. Spring and autumn are relatively short, changeable transitional seasons, spring bringing the thaw and the greening of the city's many parks and chestnut trees, and autumn its golden foliage before the cold sets in.
